Profit When Business Is Slow The Rainmaker By Gary Lockwood When It Isn’t Raining

Remember when scientists used to seed the clouds to try to make it rain? They would sweep over rain clouds and dump salt pellets to try to force the rain from the clouds. I guess they figured that they could just help Nature along a bit. In terms of getting prospective clients who are going to be your customers this idea seems to bear fruit. But you must take action.

In my years of helping business owners and professionals discover ways to grow their business, I’ve seen many who sat around waiting for rain. They would wait by the phone, hoping a prospective client would call or come to the business. Their attitude seemed to be a combination of passive hope and resignation. They hope someone will do business with them. They hope that others will initiate contact with them. They seem resigned to whatever business floated their way.

Others, including some of the most successful, took positive action “to make it rain”. These are the ones who made calls, ran ads, got out of the office to make their own contacts. Through their activity, these business professionals created opportunities for new business.

A few years ago, my own business went through a slow period. As the business slowed down, revenues decreased and demands on my time decreased, too. For awhile, I enjoyed the slower pace. Then I figured out that we were on a path to financial disaster. I realized that something had to change drastically.

Verna, my wife and business partner, finally said, “Get on the phone and stir up the cosmic dust”! So, I took her advice and started making calls. I called everyone I knew. I called past clients, old prospects, people from my old phone lists. I even called people I knew in a previous company. Also, I got out of the office and attended business mixers, seminars and other events where business professionals (my target market) tended to show up.

Sure enough, after I started all the activity, we began to notice that the phone was ringing constantly. We were getting calls from prospective clients wanting to know more about our services. Even more interesting, many of the incoming calls were from people we did not contact. It seemed like the very act of outbound activity was causing inbound business.

Time and again over the years, I’ve seen this phenomenon. Positive action, directed outward seems to stir up the cosmic dust. It doesn’t work if the actions are directed inward. No matter how many times you count the inventory, rearrange the furniture or have internal meetings, these inward-focused actions won’t cause clients to show up or prospects to call you.

So what does this mean for you? Consider a couple of things. First, brainstorm the types of outward-focused activities that are appropriate for your business. Would it be appropriate to make calls (to whom?), go visit (where?), run ads (what type, when?). Would it be reasonable to attend mixers, seminars, do some direct mailings, conduct a telephone survey, or canvass the neighborhood?

Next, pull out your calendar and start blocking off some time for these tasks. Generally, this type of business-building activity is best done in blocks of time, so pencil in blocks of one to three hours for this.

Clearly, most of these actions require preparation. To make sure you don’t make a career of just the preparation, schedule the set-up tasks on your to-do list for specific days. That way, you’re more likely to get them done.

Finally, Just Do It. You know in your heart that you enjoy the results of this business-building action, especially when the revenue starts to come in. The benefits to you and your enterprise are legion. More clients, more revenue, better client relationships and happier employees are just a few of the advantages you’ll realize when you take action to make it rain.

So, what are you waiting for? “Stir up the cosmic dust”! When all else fails just do it. How To Get Customers with this advice.

Money: Dream or Reality

After researching work at home opportunities, a startling discovery was made.  95% of Internet Marketers don’t achieve their goals. What is the reason for this huge failure rate?  Many Newbies simply don’t prepare a business plan before jumping into a home-based business.  As a result these “entrepreneurs” give up before their Internet Marketing businesses begin making good money.

A well thought out business plan not only includes a description of how you will get traffic to your website and blog, but also how to turn that traffic into sales. The cliche “plan your work and work your plan” is great advice for Newbies & Veterans alike.

The following simple, but effective, “Plan of Action” will result in your work at home opportunity making more sales online and hence, becoming profitable.

1. Consider your customer’s needs first.  It’s crucial to list the benefits the customer will receive as a result of using your product. While features are important, a potential buyer is more interested in the benefits.  In other words, what the product will do for them.

For example:  A feature of an online shopping mall is that it consists of over 1000 stores.  A benefit to the customer who is shopping online for diet or weight loss products might be that there’s no possibility of running into friends or co-workers.  This in turn increases their comfort level while making these purchases.

Another benefit is that customers may purchase fitness equipment from the convenience of their homes. They not only will save the extra expense of gas since they don’t have to drive to a mall, but they also won’t have to fight the crowds.

2. Avoid making the mistake of slapping the potential customer in the face with your product.  Gradually, build up to asking for the sale.  Remember what you felt like when someone stopped you and abruptly insisted that you buy something?

There’s a major difference in reviewing the benefits of your product with your customer first and then asking for the sale, as compared to immediately demanding that they buy your product.

Your research should have already resulted in knowing “why” customers buy specific products or services.  So be sure to state those selling points up front.  Don’t make the mistake many Internet Marketers do…sell, sell, sell before the time is right.

Another important factor to keep in mind is that most people surfing the net have already made a buying decision.  It’s up to you to make them feel good about buying it from you instead of your competitor.

3. Knowledge is power.  So do the research and find out which products have the best conversion rates and sell those.  You can’t go wrong with weight loss and diet products.  Of course if your passion happens to be in another product, by all means sell it.  However, for long term success there are certain markets in which people will always spend money.

Weight loss and diet products sell well online every day. Golf enthusiasts also spend a small fortune trying to improve their game. Any type of information product that solves a problem is a potential gold mine.

All you have to do is look around you to see what’s in demand. Watch your TV and see what products are being advertised! Go to a bookstore and look for the top selling books.

You can also utilize your computer by viewing “Google Trends” to discover popular items that are being searched.  It’s one of the best search engines in the world. The point I’m trying to make is to sell more online you need to offer products that are in demand now.

4. Provide multiple ways for your customer to pay.  PayPal is a good choice because it processes payments quickly and  accepts major credit cards too. However, you can also Alert Pay or personal checks, if you so desire.  To sell more online you must make it easy for people to do business with you.

5. The final step in turning your dreams into reality and start selling more online is advertise your products in multiple ways. You will never make any sales without quality traffic and to do this you need a well thought out, advertising plan.  Use many types of adverstising campaigns, including online and offline.

These five strategic tips for your online business will help you avoid Internet Marketing failure. By following these key points, and working hard on a consistent basis, your chances for earning top dollars as an Affiliate Marketer will greatly increase!

My Heart Is Heavy

Recently, I was once again reminded of just how fragile life is. A friend of my teenage daughter died unexpectedly. The news of Ashley Dillon’s death was devastating because she was loved by all those who knew her. During her short time on earth she made many friends, volunteered at her church, competed in sports & participated in the high school band. According to my daughter, Juanita, there was never a time when her friend didn’t have a smile on her face or a kind word for those around her.

Juanita called me to tell me of the loss of her friend, but I could hardly understand what she was saying because of the huge sobs coming from her. I had never heard her cry so deeply. Upon arriving home, we spent time talking about Ashley. My daughter kept repeating that her friend was a good person, who always got A’s on her report card & was nice to everyone. She just didn’t understand why God would take a person who had such a positive influence on others.

My thoughts turned to the family. No one expects, nor wants to out live their children. I wanted to reach out to them and let them know how deeply this has touched me and that they are in my thoughts and prayers. I wish I could erase the huge loss that the family is experiencing, and take away the pain & anguish.

We must not question why such a loving, brilliant individual’s life was snuffed out at such an early age. For it is God’s will and he wanted Ashley to be with him. Only faith in our Lord will help get friends and family through these extremely challenging times.

I love my teenage daughter deeply and would be devastated if anything happened to her. I call her my “P & J” (pride & joy). While she’s lovable the majority of the time, there’s occasions when we have disagreements. I’ve discovered that the teenage years tend to be challenging for parents and children alike. I call the struggles & moodiness that teenagers experience “the teenager syndrome.”

My P & J was always an angel during her pre-teen years. But, lately a different side appears from time to time. It’s during these moments that I must keep reminding myself that the angelic side will reappear & stay for good once the teenage years are behind her. Until then I’ll continue to motivate, love, nurture and guide her. No matter what challenges we may have we both know that we’ll overcome them. For the love in our family is strong and the Lord’s blessings are many. I cherish our time together.

I can’t imagine that Ashley experienced “the teenager syndrome” because she had such a big heart. On the other hand she was a teenager and may have had mood swings. Therefore, I want her family to know that Ashley loved them very much. I’m sure she admired them for standing firm in their beliefs and family values. I would also venture to guess that if she had ever been “grounded” or not allowed to hang out with her friends, she knew that she was being disciplined out of love.

Ashley Dillon was only 16 years old when she died. However, in her young life, she managed to become an inspiration in the lives of many. Please remember to focus on the positives and don’t beat yourself up wishing that you would have handled things differently. Ashley wants you to hold onto the precious memories that you created together.
